Micro-betting allows rapid, continuous wagering, creating heightened risks for impulsive behavior and addiction. That’s why Assemblyman Hutchison introduced legislation to ban micro-betting in New Jersey.
The Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee placed the bill on discussion-only, allowing the public and experts to inform the legislature on this topic.
The committee heard testimony from Dr. Harry Levant, Director of Gambling Policy at the Public Health Advocacy Institute, who outlined the public health concerns associated with micro-betting and its potential to exacerbate problem gambling.
The committee also heard from individuals with lived experience, including Bryan Biehl, who courageously shared his personal story and the harmful effects of micro-betting. Jeanne Swain of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey also provided testimony, offering insight into the real-world consequences seen by advocates and support organizations.
