In response to growing concerns about the misuse and addictive potential of tianeptine, often referred to as "gas station heroin," Assemblyman Dan Hutchison's bill A4814 to classify tianeptine as a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance passed the Assembly. This will recognize its serious risks to public health.
Constituents have voiced their concerns about tianeptine, which can be easily purchased at gas stations and convenience stores. Tianeptine, an unregulated antidepressant in the United States is not approved by the FDA and unregulated.
The deceptive marketing of tianeptine as a treatment for various health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and pain, has been debunked by the FDA.
By classifying tianeptine as a Schedule II controlled substance, Bill A4814 will restrict its availability and regulate its distribution, making it more difficult for individuals to obtain and misuse. This crucial step will help protect our communities and support those struggling with addiction.
