Senate Committee Unanimously Advances Miller Bill to Study Advanced Nuclear Reactors

Assemblyman Miller's bill, A5517/S4689, to direct the NJ Board of Public Utilities to conduct a study on whether advanced nuclear reactors could be developed across the Garden State, passed the Senate Environment and Energy Committee unanimously.

New Jersey already relies on nuclear power for over 40 percent of its electricity, making it a major source of clean and dependable energy. Due to rising utility costs, the purpose of this legislation is to find and produce reliable energy.

This study will look at potential locations, safety requirements, environmental impact, and cost considerations. Advanced modular reactors are new nuclear technologies designed to be smaller and safer than traditional nuclear power plants. They produce no greenhouse gas emissions while operating, can be built in sections and transported to their sites, and are designed to use less water and produce less waste. Because they are modular, they can be added gradually as energy needs grow.

After this bill passes the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, it will need a full Senate vote. Then, it’s on the Governor’s desk for signature. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 856-232-6700.
