Sober living homes can be an important part of an individual’s road to recovery, offering a safe and structured environment for them to rebuild their lives. However, the lack of oversight in these homes has caused concerns in communities across our state.
To address this issue, I’ve introduced S2952 and S2527, to ensure sober living homes are regulated responsibly. These measures include:
Requiring on-site, live-in staff who are qualified to support residents.
Administering regular drug and alcohol tests to maintain a sober environment.
Encouraging counseling and peer-led recovery meetings.
Enforcing a strict ban on illegal drugs and alcohol.
Mandating unannounced state inspections twice a year.
S2952 has already passed the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee unanimously and is progressing through the Assembly. These bills aim to protect neighborhoods while continuing to support those in recovery.
