Every dollar says, “This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private.” Yet some businesses were refusing to accept cash. To stop that, I sponsored A591 in 2018, now a law, which prohibits New Jersey retailers from refusing cash payments.

Our office was recently informed by a resident that a group of car wash franchises stopped accepting cash, prompting our intervention. After confirming the violation, we spoke with management, and cash payments were quickly reinstated.
