Recently, deeply disturbing cases in New Jersey and Connecticut have highlighted how children withdrawn from traditional schools can sometimes be hidden away and abused without anyone knowing. While homeschooling can be a great option for many families, New Jersey currently has some of the nation’s laxest oversight laws.

To help protect children, we’ve introduced Senate Bill 4589. It would require that each year, a child in a home education program and their parent or guardian meet with a designated person from their local school district. This meeting offers parents a chance to ask for support and allows the school district to conduct a brief general health and wellness check.
